Semex’s Immunity+ range boosted by Doorman and Mogul sons

Two more Genomax sires have joined the unique Immunity+ range at Semex, taking the number of sires with improved disease resistance available to UK farmers to 47.
Immunity+ sires are tested and shown to have a stronger immune system, as well as the other usual traits, and, because the heritability is significantly higher than traditional health traits this improved immune response is passed on to their daughters. The net benefit is a corresponding reduction in common diseases like mastitis, metritis, respiratory diseases, retained placentas and displaced abomasa, plus a stronger response to vaccination.

The two new introductions, both genomic, are the Mogul son DG Calando and the Doorman son View-Home Utah.

Calando, whose dam is the VG89 Larcrest Cale, out of Observer, stands out for his high fat and protein percentages which will give a much-needed boost to milk prices for many farmers, as well as his type and health traits. He scores +3.66 for TM, +3.30 for Mammary and +2.88 for Legs & Feet; while his SCC is -13 and his lifespan score is 0.4. All these contribute to an ability to breed wide, strong, long-lasting cows with superb udders, legs and feet. He will be an ideal choice for farmers wanting to maximise milk constituents as well as building up their herd immunity.

Utah’s dam is by Roylane Socra Robust, one of the leading sires of sons of the last few proof rounds. Utah breeds milky cows with good protein, and also comes with great type credentials, at +3.54 for TM, +3.37 for Mammary and +2.43 for Legs & Feet. Low somatic cell count (-18), fertility index of +5.9, a lifespan score of 0.5, Immunity+ status and the fact that he is also a HealthSmart sire, indicate a tremendous ability to breed disease-resistant, healthy, long-lasting daughters. Suppliers of A2 milk will also be pleased that he is A2A2 genotype for B-casein.

“These two sires will be in great demand, with Calando edging it for farmers who want high constituents, and Utah being near the top of the list for the many thousands of Doorman fans around the world,” says Michael Dennison, UK sales manager for Semex.

“He is in short supply because he is one of the most popular sires in the world at the moment, but Utah, together with Benner Jazznight (another Immunity+ Doorman son), will both ably step up to fill the present void,” he concludes.
