Remembering Marge Lant of Lantland Farm, NY

The New York Holstein fraternity lost a wonderful member on Thursday, August 30, as Marge Lant of Lantland Farm, Horseheads, passed away surrounded by the love of her family.

For those who had the pleasure of having Marge a part of your life, you know that her first love and top priority was her family. She farmed with her brothers Walter, Ross, and Martin and together, they continued the legacy of their parents, Fred & Ruth, NYHA Master Breeders in 1983. The Lant siblings were honored by NYHA as Master Breeders in 2015 and Marge was there to be part of that wonderful evening. Brother-in-law Dave Post, husband of eldest sibling Carolyn Lant Post of Pineyvale, made the heartfelt presentation to his family.

Marge was a wise and wonderful aunt and mentor to her nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. She savored every moment with them and celebrated every one of their successes. Her easy smile and ability to exude kindness in her speech are gifts that we will all remember.

And while family always came first, her beloved Lantland herd was firmly in second place. The cows were a daily priority and source of pride for Marge. She loved good cows, she loved caring for good cows, and she was an integral part of the Lantland herd’s successes. And in that spirit, she was right there to share in the show winnings and accomplishments of all her family, be they in Chemung County, Delaware County, or Lewis County.

With a wide circle of friends, Marge touched the lives of people not only in New York, but throughout PA and across the United States and Canada. Whether you saw her yesterday or a year ago, she made everyone feel at home and you left her presence better than when you got there. She was a gracious host to all who visited Lantland.

While we as a fraternity are saddened at her passing, deep down we are all grateful for the chance to have known this wonderful woman. While her 64 years do not seem enough, they were blessed years full life and love, laughter, loyalty, and passion. May she rest in peace, reunited with all those she has loved, watching over those of us who remain to carry on. She will be missed, but her legacy will continue when we remember her smile, her kindness, her generosity, and her commitment to the things that really matter in life. -Mike McCaffrey, NY Holstein News Editor.
