Pedigree Analysis of US National Holstein Show Winners

The Holstein USA Pedigree Analysis of National Show Winners has been released, compiling data on the top three animals of each age division at the ten National Holstein Shows held in 2016, noting that if an animal appeared in the top ten of multiple shows, she is counted once for each show.

The vast majority of top-placing females held classification scores on the day they placed in the top three, however only three of 18 milking yearlings were scored, with an average classification of 85 points. The averages rose with age, with aged cows averaging 93.3 points and 150K Cows averaging 93.6 points.

This year, 394 animals are included in the total, sired by 108 different bulls. This total is broken down into 169 heifers, sired by 57 different bulls and 225 milking females sired by 71 different bulls.

The overall top ranking sire of National Show Winners was Maple-Downs-I G W Atwood, siring 59 of the top animals, 43 of which were milking females and 16 of which were heifers. Atwood was also the leading sire of milking females. Coming in second is his sire, Braedale Goldwyn siring 53 top contenders. Rounding out the top three sires is Val-Bisson Doorman siring 43 head, 33 of which were heifers, making him the top sire of show winning heifers.

The leading overall maternal grandsire of national show winners was Braedale Goldwyn, appearing in the second generation of 69 animals, including 41 heifers, making him the leading maternal grandsire of heifers. Coming in second in the overall count is Regancrest Dundee, who is the grandsire of 46 animals, including 33 milking females, making him the leading maternal grandsire of milking females. Rounding out the top three is Maple-Downs-I G W Atwood, maternal grandsire of 20 head.

The overall top sire stack was the cross of Goldwyn x Dundee, with 19 overall daughters, including 17 milking females, which was the leading stack in that category.  Following was the leading sire stack of heifers, Doorman x Goldwyn, which was responsible for 18 winners, 15 of which were heifers. The next most successful sire stack was that of Sid x Goldwyn.
