The author of a newly released children’s picture book ‘Holly the Holstein’, is not only setting out to educate younger folk but also help out dairy farmers doing it tough.
‘Holly the Holstein’, which is written by author Russell Smith and illustrated by Milan Samadder, features farmer Col and his family, a character based on Queensland dairy farmer Colin Daley.
It tells the story of a Holstein who is bored with her life, only for her to discover her face on so many dairy products when farmer Col takes her to the local agricultural show where she also earns the title of champion cow.
“The book is largely about educating children on the daily milking routine and the importance of the dairy sector to everyday life,” Mr Smith said.
Most importantly, proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to dairy farmers.
“Profits from the book will be donated to help those farmers devastated by the floods.
“There are still farmers there who will have to continue hand feeding their cows until spring.
“So I’m hoping this book will raise some funds to help them out.
“The profits will be directed to the Mid Coast Dairy Advancement Group, who is delivering the most effective and practical support to the affected farmers.”
Mr Smith grew up on a farm, nearby Colin’s family farm outside Millaa Millaa, Queensland.
“It is just something I would like to do to help the farmers and industry,” Mr Smith said.
“There were more than 200 farms on the Atherton Tablelands when we lived there and now there is something like 38 today.
“Colin was my best friend in primary school and I’ve spent some time with him on the farm in recent years.
“I also think there is a general lack of awareness among the general public of what a Holstein is and the daily challenges of being a dairy farmer.”
