Earl Vander Meulen Memorial Award Winner
Kathy Beerwort, Canton de Hatley, Quebec
The Earl Vander Meulen Memorial Award selection committee is very pleased to name Kathy Beerwort as the 2012 recipient of this award.
Kathy, along with her husband Callum McKinven and business partners Gerald and Connie Halbach, own Lookout Holsteins and Jerseys, located in the very picturesque Canton de Hatley, Quebec. Kathy is said to be “the rock” of the operation, maintaining the farm on a day-to-day basis in light of Callum’s busy travel schedule. She plays an integral role for the Lookout show team, and has been on the halter of many show champions and class winners.
Kathy has been a lifelong participant in the 4-H program; as a member of the Brome 4-H club during her formative years, and as a parent volunteer with the Hatley 4-H club. She was also very active in the Quebec Young Farmers program, and has shown at numerous fairs and competitions in Ontario, Quebec, and the United States.
Kathy’s nominees for this award note that, “Her dedication to the farm and the well-being of the cows is incredible. Her work ethic is second to none. Her dedication to family is never-ending. Perhaps the characteristic that mirrors Earl the most is her strong character. Kathy has definite beliefs and has passed this and her integrity on to her family.”

The Earl Vander Meulen Memorial Award was established by friends of the late Earl Vander Meulen. It is presented annually to the person that best exemplifies the qualities and values that Earl held dear. The award commemorates Earl’s strong character, and recognizes his legacy of caring for family, establishing life-long friendships, a strong faith and love of the farm.

Récipiendaire du Prix commémoratif Earl Vander Meulen

Le comité de sélection du Prix commémoratif Earl Vander Meulen est fier d’annoncer que Kathy Beerwort est la récipiendaire de ce prix pour 2012.
Kathy et son mari, Callum McKinven ainsi que leurs partenaires d’affaires Gerald et Connie Halbach, appartiennent Lookout Holsteins & Jerseys, sis dans le pittoresque canton de Hatley, au Québec. On dit que Kathy est « la base » de l’opération, s’occupant des tâches quotidiennes de la ferme vu que Callum voyage beaucoup. Elle joue un rôle important dans l’équipe d’exposition de Lookout et on l’a vue au licou de plusieurs championnes et gagnantes de classe.
Kathy a participé toute sa vie aux programmes 4-H: comme membre du club 4-H de Brome lors de sa jeunesse et comme parent volontaire avec le club 4-H de Hatley. Elle est aussi très active auprès du programme de Jeunes Ruraux du Québec et a présenté des animaux à plusieurs foires et expositions en Ontario, au Québec et aux États-Unis.
Dans les documents de nomination de Kathy pour ce prix il est mentionné que « son dévouement à la ferme et au bien-être des vaches est incroyable. Son intégrité au travail est inégalée. Son dévouement envers sa famille n’a pas de limite. Le trait de Kathy qui nous rappelle le plus Earl est sa force de caractère. Kathy a une intégrité et des valeurs bien définies qu’elle transmet à sa famille. »
