Class For The 2013 Jersey Youth Academy Has Been Selected

Reynoldsburg, Ohio, February 1, 2013—Chris Sorenson, President of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA), today announced the class for the third Jersey Youth Academy, July 14 to 19 in Columbus, Ohio.

“The 36 young people from 17 states selected for this class exemplify the many talented, interested Jersey youth across the United States that our organization wants to encourage to pursue careers in the Jersey dairy business,” Sorenson said.

“Building upon Jersey youth programs initiated over 50 years ago, the Jersey Youth Academy is an intensive educational program focused specifically on the Jersey cow and the many elements of the Jersey dairy business. Academy challenges participants to understand the long history and recent growth of the Jersey breed in this country and shows them the opportunities and challenges of the dairy business in the future.”

Participants in the third Jersey Youth Academy, with their current academic institution, are:

Arizona: Anneke Moss, Litchfield Park (Estrella Mountain Community College).

California: Rylin Lindahl, Visalia (Immanuel High School); Amy McBirney, San Jose (California Polytechnic State University); Theresa Sweeney, Visalia (Cornell University); and Ashlan Wickstrom, Hilmar (Blinn College-Bryan).

Georgia: James Holton, Dawsonville (Dawson County High School); and Matthew Holton, Dawsonville (Dawson County High School).

Kansas: Taylor Leach, Linwood (Basehor-Linwood High School).

Louisiana: Morgan Richard, Elton (Louisiana State University).

Massachusetts: Kimberly Kubosiak, Southampton (Hampshire Regional High School).

Minnesota: Jon Frenchick, Paynesville (Paynesville Area High School).

Mississippi: Jessica Smith, Picayune (Pearl River Central High School).

New Hampshire: Amy Gowell Drogue, Sullivan (University of New Hampshire).

New York: Emily Chittenden, Schodack Landing (Maple Hill High School); Meagan Chittenden, Schodack Landing (Maple Hill High School); and Casey Porter, Watertown (South Jefferson High School).

North Carolina: Olivia Pearson, Lincolnton (North Carolina State University).

Ohio: Meagan Bolen, Fremont (The Ohio State University).

Oregon: Rebekah Gourley, Scio (Linn Benton Community College); Valery Silva, Beaver (Tillamook Community College); and Rebecca Thomas, Cornelius (Oregon State University).

Pennsylvania: Amber Gabel, Newport (Newport High School).
Texas: Gerret Boer, Dalhart (Dalhart High School); and Chase Koon, Emory (Sulphur Springs High School).

Washington: Katie Hutchins, Outlook (Sunnyside High School); Shannon Rodeffer, Snohomish (Iowa State University); and Andrea Smaciarz, Raymond (Oregon State University).

Wisconsin: Sean Brown, Dodgeville (Farm & Industry Short Course, University of Wisconsin-Madison); Mitchell Endres, Lodi (Lodi High School); Allison Foster, Portage (High Marq Environmental Charter School); Cassandra Krull, Lake Mills (University of Wisconsin-Platteville); Jacob Leum, Viroqua (University of Wisconsin-Platteville); Miranda Randall, Soldiers Grove (North Crawford High School); Morgan Randall, Soldiers Grove (University of Wisconsin-River Falls); Janelle Remington, Juneau (Dodgeland High School); and Kaitlyn Riley, Gays Mills (University of Wisconsin-Madison).

Selection was based on merit, motivation and preparation for the program as reflected in the written application and goal statement. Applications were reviewed by a committee appointed by Sorenson and chaired by AJCA Director James Quist. All program costs, including round-trip transportation for participants, are paid by the Academy.

The 2013 keynote address will be given by James S. Huffard III, the 2012 National Dairy Shrine Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder and past-President of the American Jersey Cattle Association. Dairy sustainability expert Dr. Jude Capper is also confirmed to speak.

A highlight of their program will be the “Meet the Deans” session, where the young people will meet leaders from the Jersey community to gain their unique insights about the future of the dairy business with a specific focus on the Jersey cow.

The Jersey Youth Academy is a 501(c)(3) private foundation. Contributors represent a broad spectrum of Jersey breeder and dairy industry support.
