U.S. calving traits – especially Sire Calving Ease – will look quite different with the August 11 genetic evaluations. After the April proofs, it was apparent there was a mismatch between the genetic evaluations and the actual rates of calving problems in most U.S. herds. In August, new phenotypic bases for calving traits will be implemented, resulting from swift analysis and cooperation across the U.S. genetic community.
John B. Cole of USDA AGIL* and Ezequiel Nicolazzi of CDCB will summarize the “why, what and how” of the calving trait update, focusing on the changes that dairy producers and industry can expect to see on August 11.
All attendees are encouraged to submit questions during the webinar. The brief presentations will be followed by a Q&A session, when John and Ezequiel will be joined by Sophie Eaglen of National Association of Animal Breeders and Tom Lawlor of Holstein Association USA.
