The world’s food producers have a big job ahead of them in the next century. New data from the United Nations project a world population of 11 billion by 2100.
The UN’s “World Population Prospects” doesn’t stop there.
Depending on statistical models, the number of people inhabiting our planet could top 16.6 billion or be as low 6.8 billion.
In either case, the world’s poorest regions will likely see a dramatic population boon. In Africa alone, the population is forecast to increase nearly four-fold by 2100 to 4.2 billion. Previous UN data projected the world’s population to reach 9 billion by 2050, and food production will need to increase by 70 percent over the next 37 years.
Farmers are ready for the challenge.
In March, a report titled “Developing a New Vision for United States Agriculture, Forestry, and Conservation” showed that U.S. farmers and ranchers have the capability to meet the world’s growing need for food, fiber and energy by 2050, while protecting and improving environmental health.
