The Craigcrest Story

E & J Craig Farms is owned and operated by Elgin and Joan Craig. Elgin and Joan are the proud owners of the Holstein herd known as “Craigcrest” located near Arthur, Ontario.

Craigcrest Holsteins was started in 1950 by William and Dorothy Craig. The farm was located in Peel County on the outskirts of Brampton. In 1976 William and Dorothy, along with their sons David and Elgin, decided to move Craigcrest Holsteins to Arthur which is Wellington County.

The Craig family has received three Master Breeder Shields. William, with his sons, received his Shield in 1987 and David and Elgin received their own in 1997 and just recently Elgin and Joan have received their own in 2013. William and Dorothy remained actively involved and interested in the farm into their elder years. They were particularly delighted to help welcome the many international tour groups who visited from all over the world. They were also strong supporters at 4-H Shows! In 2001, after achieving great success and world-wide recognition, Elgin and David sold all of the cattle in a Herd Dispersal Sale which averaged over $5,000.

In 2003, after a year off-duty Elgin decided to go back into the dairy business with a new partner, his wife Joan. Joan “officially” joined the family farm when E & J Craig Farms Inc. was created.

Consistently, the herd has developed to the quality herd it is today. Elgin and Joan have two children, Stephanie and James, who both participated in the 4-H Program. Their 4-H calves are the foundation for the present herd. Stephanie and James shared an enthusiasm for showing calves and their involvement provided many exciting moments at local, regional and national Shows. David and his wife Novelia, along with daughters Lindsay and D’elle and their families, are continued supporters.
