Give a brief History of your operation. How did you get started in purebred cattle? How have the facilities changed over the years?

Ferme Outaouais 2012
Ferme Outaouais, Plaisance, Quebec

On May 12, 1888, Yvon’s great grandparents settled on the Papineauville peninsula on the edge of the Ottawa River, on the lot 25. They had to deforest their lot in order to make it workable, which was a very difficult task. Around 1907, the neighbouring farm was purchased and in 1919 they sold the farm to their youngest son Adélard, who became the 2nd generation to farm there and continued with the expansion. At that time, the transportation of milk was your own responsibility and the cheese plant was on the other side of the river. In 1955, Adélard sold the farm to his youngest son Bruno and his wife Liliane, after purchasing more neighbouring land 10 years prior. Bruno graduated from Agricultural School in Sainte-Martine, QC, and introduced artificial insemination and dairy herd improvement program on the farm, put in a new milk tank by the end of the 1960’s, and bought a neighbouring farm when expansion was again required. He also acquired the first purebred cattle and they became his pride and joy. In 1982, Yvon and his wife, Suzanne Leduc, took over the farm and became the 4th generation to have ownership. Over the next few years the herd becomes entirely purebred and classification and milk recording become valuable management tools. Mathieu, son of Yvon and Suzanne, worked on the farm from 2006-2012 and then left for a new challenge. In 2011, daughter Annie, graduated from the Institute of Agri-Food Technology in St. Hyacinthe and returned to the farm full time, becoming a full partner and 5th generation farmer in 2015. Outaouais Prelude Sigale became the first excellent cow to carry the Outaouais prefix in 1999 (owned by Ferme Villyvon), and in 2005 Outaouais Merrick Zita became their third excellent cow but the first excellent cow at the farm.

Who is currently involved in the operation? What are their roles?

Ferme Outaouais has 3 owners: Suzanne Leduc, Yvon Chartrand and Annie Chartrand. Annie takes care of the herd and is responsible for milking, feeding of cows and calves, and overall herd health. Yvon is responsible for the field work and machinery and Suzanne manages the accounting.

How many cows do you milk? What is your current herd classification and herd production average?

The farm has a total of 85 heads, which includes 45 milking cows for 61 kgs/day of quota. The current herd classification is 8 EX, 28 VG and 17 GP. The average production is 11,081 kg milk at 4.11% fat and 3.16% protein, and a BCA of 244-270-244.

What bulls are you currently using? Do you do any embryo transfer or IVF?

We use bulls that are high in production to increase the average production of our herd, selecting bulls with high milk and components, mainly from Semex. We do very little embryo transfer. While selecting for production, I don’t leave aside the conformation because I always want to maintain and improve our herd. Genetics move fast so I’m using 40% proven bulls and 60% genomic bulls. I work with PRO$ as well, especially for the heifers.

How many acres do you manage? Do you grow all the crops you need or do you buy and sell feed as well?

We farm 271 acres: 20 acres of pasture, 74 acres of grain and silage corn, 42 acres of wheat, 49 acres of alfalfa hay and 86 acres of mixed hay. The herd is fed dry hay, balage, corn silage, moist corn, supplement and minerals from Purina.

What cow families have most impacted your herd and contributed points to this shield?

Outaouais-Merrick-Zita
Outaouais Merrick Zita EX-90 3E 7*

Outaouais Merrick Zita EX-90 3E 7* has had a tremendous impact. She produced 94,018 kg milk with a 4.4% fat and 3.1% protein in 8 lactations. She was the 3rd excellent cow with our prefix, but the first one at the farm. Production runs in this family as her grandmother produced more than 110,000 kg Lifetime, and 4 of her daughters and one of her granddaughters are over 60,000 kg lifetime. In total, Zita produced 9 daughters (3 EX, 5 VG and 1 GP). One the best in the current herd is Outaouais Lauthority Zalia EX. With 10 brood stars in the pedigree and some of the best producers on the farm, when we think of the Zita family we think of longevity.

Outaouais Thunder Hally EX 2E 2* is a daughter of Stanhow Milan Heidy EX-90 2* who we purchased as an embryo. Hally has 9 daughters, all scored VG, 8 of which come from the same flush to Goldwyn. Currently two of our eight excellent cows are granddaughters of Hally: Outaouais Jeeves Heidy EX-91 2E 1* and Outaouais Sepctrum Heloise EX-90. The strength of the Hally family is mammary systems with lots of veins!

Outaouais Stoneham Boucle D’or EX-91 7E 3* produced 96,838 kg of milk in her lifetime and gave us 5 daughters (1 EX, 2 VG & 2 GP). Her EX daughter, Outaouais Tribute Blanche, just calved with her 8th calf in December and already has 80,000 kgs in her lifetime. A granddaughter of Boucle D’or, Outaouais Fever Betty EX-91 3E, is already following her grandmother’s footsteps when it comes to longevity. Betty is already pregnant with her 6th calf at almost 6 years old. This family breeds cows with good longevity, production, health and fertility.
