Veterinary Feed Directive Bringing New Challenges - Cowsmo

Veterinary Feed Directive Bringing New Challenges

As if farming wasn’t difficult enough, keeping up with new regulations can seem never ending.

Marylynn Collins with Cornell Cooperative Extension says the “Veterinary Client Patient Relationship” document coming January 1 has two issues tied to it.

The Veterinary Client Patient Relationship (VCPR) is signed by both the farm owner and veterinarian and reviewed annually.  The document is part of the Dairy FARM (Farmers Assuring Responsible Management) Program being administered by The National Milk Producers Federation.

If your milk cooperative is a part of the National Milk Producers then you are expected to comply with the procedures and requirements starting January 1st.  Some members include DFA, Oneida-Madison Milk Producers Co-op, Land o Lakes and Agri-Mark.

Here’s another result of the new regulation; you will need a valid VCPR in order to obtain a Veterinary Feed Directive to use of common antibiotics on or in feed. Need help deciphering that?  Contact Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Dairy Educator for more information.
