Obituary for Wisconsin Guernsey Breeder Howard Sattler

Everyone at Cowsmopolitan extends our deepest sympathies and most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Wisconsin Guernsey breeder Howard Sattler of New Holstein, who passed away on May 17th.

Obituary for Wisconsin Guernsey Breeder Howard SattlerHoward B. Sattler, age 96, New Holstein, formerly of Calumetville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at the Calumet Medical Center in Chilton.

He was born July 27, 1920, to the late Bernhard & Meta (Schussman) Sattler.

Howard attended grade school in Brothertown and UW Farm and Industry Short Course in Madison. Before his marriage, Howard worked for Calumet County DHIA (Dairy Herd Improvement Association) as a milk testing technician. He continued to use this service throughout his career.

On May 4, 1946, he married the former Gloria Manderscheid at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC) in Malone. Gloria preceded him in death earlier this year on January 19, 2017.

Howard and Gloria established the Artesia Acres registered Guernsey herd in the Town of Calumet near Calumetville; they started out with five cows which eventually expanded to 100. He was recognized for consistently producing high quality milk and show-winning cattle. He was a charter member of Lake to Lake Dairy Cooperative where he served as a director for seven years. Howard served on the board of directors for the Fond du Lac County and Wisconsin Guernsey Breeders Association where he received several recognitions. He served as general and dairy leader of Calumet 4-H Club. Howard received a Land Conservation Award from Fond du Lac County for implementing progressive land use methods. Just prior to retiring, Howard and Gloria moved to his child-hood homestead in Brothertown.

He was a life-long member of St. Paul’s UCC and served in many leadership roles. Howard served on the Calumet District 11 School Board.

Howard enjoyed reading, gardening, playing cards, fishing, and playing dartball. His biggest enjoyment was spending time with his family. He was well known for his inspirational speeches and collection of one-line quotes.

Howard is survived by his 10 children, Oran (Betty) Sattler of Malone, Dwight (Mary) Sattler of Malone, Catherine (Tim) Barr of Nekoosa, WI, Lorene (Joe) Baltz of Kronenwetter, WI, Linda (Stanley) Huikko of Cottage Grove, MN, Lyle (Mary) Sattler of Chilton, Paul (Kathy) Sattler of Maribel, Kristine (Dennis) Fincher of Bryant, WI, David (JoDee) Sattler of Hartland, WI, and Charles (Barbara) Sattler of Marysville, OH; 25 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; his brother, Donald (Diane) Sattler of Chilton; and his sister-in-law, Ardis Swensen of Dunwoody, GA. He is further survived by many nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Gloria; daughter-in-law, Virginia Sattler; son-in-law, Arnold Freidig; and two sisters, Mildred Jensen and June Gasch.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 PM on Sunday, June 4, 2017, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, N10362 St. Paul Road, Malone, WI 53049. Rev. Daniel Schultz will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery following the service.

Visitation: Family and friends may call at the Sippel Funeral Home, 2618 Altona Avenue, New Holstein, WI 53061, on Saturday, June 3rd from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM. Visitation will also be at St. Paul’s Church on Sunday, June 4th from 12:30 PM until 1:15 PM.

A Memorial Fund will be established in Howard’s name.
