New York Holstein Convention 2017

Liverpool, NY…The 2017 All Breeds Convention was held at the Holiday Inn-Liverpool on January 12-14.  NY Holstein Breeders from around the state gathered on Thursday for a business meeting and sale Thursday evening.  The sale was very successful, co-managed by the Cattle Exchange and the New York Holstein Association, averaging $9,970 on 23 live lots.

Friday morning convention attendees were able to listen to Jessica Chittenden Ziehm with New York Animal Agriculture Coalition speak about telling your farm’s story and using the tools NYAAC provides to dairy farmers in New York.  The convention was very informative with David McBath speaking at the luncheon about on farm security and ways producers can protect their livelihoods by utilizing technology to improve security on their operations.  Friday afternoon hosted a panel of Crystal Grimaldi, Amy Kelsey, and Kendra Lamb speaking about their experiences with on farm labor assisted by Lea Hurtgen Ziemba and Tonya VanSlyke.

The Banquet Friday night was an event not to be missed with the association presenting the Outstanding Young Breeder, Active Master Breeder, and Retired Master Breeder Awards.    The Outstanding Young Breeder award was presented to James Canary Jr of Canary Dairy, Merial sponsored a five-hundred-dollar cash prize for the Young Breeder Award.  Winning the Active Master Breeder Award was William and Regina Lundy, Luncrest Farms of Granville, NY.  Rounding out the prestigious Master Breeder Awards the Retired Breeder award was presented to Howard Ivett of Halocrest Holsteins.    Amy Braun and Deidra Harkenrider were presented the Friend of New York Holstein award for their dedicated service to the 2016 National Holstein Convention held in New York.  Thomas Kugler, President of the New York Holstein Association made a special presentation to Patsy Gifford for her 15 years of service and dedication to New York Holstein Association as the Executive Manager.   The night was completed after a lively auction to raise money for the NY Holstein Scholarship Fund.

The All-NY Breakfast took place Saturday morning as a segue into the Junior Convention with the All-NY and Junior All-NY awards being presented by Mike McCaffrey, editor of the NY Holstein News.  The convention was made possible by the generous sponsors of the convention, New York Holstein Association would like to thank the sponsors and the convention committee for a fantastic event that was enjoyed by all.
