National Jersey Junior Award Winners Honored

Jersey youth receiving national-level achievement, production and scholarship awards were honored November3, 2012 in Louisville, Ky., by the American Jersey Cattle Association, Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Cutlines and links to photos are provided below.

 National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest

Winners in the National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest were recognized November 3, 2012 at the national awards banquet in Louisville, Ky.  National Jersey Youth Production Contest

The 20 highest-placing entries had an m.e. average of 25,605—1,216—901 and a dollar value average of $4,462.64.  2012 Pot O’Gold Production Contest

Michael Kortus, Lynden, Wash., (seated, left) was the winner of the 2012 Pot O’Gold Production Contest and $2,408.22 for Kilgus Finalist Gem-ET. Other Jersey youth receiving awards in the contest on November 3, 2012 were (seated, from left) Nathan Lawton, Newark Valley, N.Y.; Tricia Kirchdoerfer, Cape Girardeau, Mo.; Tyler Kirchdoerfer, Cape Girardeau, Mo.; Kara Maxwell, Donahue, Iowa; Clayton Kirchdoerfer, Cape Girardeau, Mo.; and (back row) Benjamin Colopy, Castile, N.Y.; Dore Baker, Wyoming, N.Y.; Ryan Lawton, Newark Valley, N.Y.; Tommy Allen, Reedsburg, Wis.; Korri Ann Briggs, Campbellsville, Ky.; and William Grammer, Sebring, Ohio. A total of 27 cows purchased by youth in the 2009 Pot O’Gold Sale were eligible for the production contest. The average m.e. production was 21,827—1,032—778 and the average dollar value is $3,815.61.

Jack C. Nisbet Memorial Scholarship

AJCA Executive Secretary Neal Smith (left) presents the Jack C. Nisbet Memorial Scholarship to Cassandra Chittenden, Schodack Landing, N.Y. Chittenden was winner of the 2011 National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest and is a student at Cornell University.  The presentation was made November3, 2012 in Louisville, Ky., during the national Jersey Junior Banquet.

Paul Jackson Memorial Scholarship

AJCA President Chris Sorenson (left) presents the Paul Jackson Memorial Scholarship for 2012-13 to Hannah Bachman, Ulysses, Penna. A student at Penn State, she placed eighth in the 2011 National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest. The presentation was made November3, 2012 in Louisville, Ky., during the national Jersey Junior Banquet.

Cedarcrest Scholarship

Robyn Terrel (left), Honesdale, Penna.,  receives the Cedarcrest Farms Scholarship from AJCA Executive Secretary Neal Smith at the Junior Banquet on November 3, 2012 in Louisville, Ky. Terrel is a first-year student in the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Blacksburg, Va.

William A. Russell Memorial Scholarship and Russell-Malnati Scholarship

Marilyn Malnati, Newberry, S.C., (center) presented the William R. Russell Memorial Scholarship to Kara Maxwell, Donahue, Iowa (left) and the Russell-Malnati Scholarship for Advanced Studies to Kelli Carstensen, Petaluma, Calif., at the Junior Banquet on November 3, 2012 in Louisville, Ky. Maxwell is a freshman at Iowa State University, while Carstensen is completing her senior year at California Polytechnic State University. Both were ranked in the top 10 of the 2011 National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest.

Fred Stout Experience Award – On-Farm Internship

Lyman Rudgers, Attica, N.Y., receives a plaque in recognition of the winning the Fred Stout Experience Award for an on-farm internship from Betty Stout Effland. Rudgers is studying dairy science at the State University of New York, Morrisville. The award was presented November 3, 2012 at the Jersey Junior Banquet in Louisville, Ky.

Reuben R. Cowles Youth Award

Dylan Ellenburg, Morristown, Tenn., received the Reuben R. Cowles Youth Award at the national Jersey Junior Banquet on November 3, 2012 in Louisville, Ky. Presenting the award was a former president of National All-Jersey Inc., Ted Luther, Mt. Ulla, N.C.
