TORONTO – Mayor John Tory is an udder-ly terrible dairy farmer.
During his speech to the Dairy Farmers of Ontario on Wednesday, Tory buttered up the crowd by admitting he wasn’t very good at milking a cow when he tried it during his tenure as Ontario PC leader.
The mayor recalled his visit to a dairy farm near Orillia where the farmer showed him how to milk a cow “the old fashioned way” and the modern way with machines.
Tory reminisced about how he had a tough time in the 20 minutes he tried to milk a Holstein cow by hand and didn’t get much better when he tried to use the milking equipment.
“I will confess … it probably took me 15 minutes just to get the milking machines attached to the udder,” Tory said. “I wasn’t very productive with my assignment that morning.”
After the speech, Tory acknowledged he didn’t realize how hard you have to pull the teats on a cow’s udder when you are milking by hand.
“You really have got to give it a good (pull),” Tory told reporters. “I was thinking, am I hurting this cow?”
He said he had a tough time attaching the milker to the cow’s udder.
“I’m afraid I’m hurting this cow,” Tory said. “And the cow is, at that moment, oblivious to all this because I guess they are. But I’m thinking, if the cow became less oblivious I would be in trouble.
“Anyway, it was a learning experience.”
