Dean foods announces closing of Illinois plant

Dean Foods Company has officially notified employees of seven dairy plants they will be shutting down operations.

The Huntley, Illinois dairy plant will be laying off more than 130 people in mid-September. Dean’s Country Fresh processing plant in Livonia, Michigan is closing at the end of August. More than 100 employees will be laid off permanently.  Dean’s Thief River Falls, Minnesota plant is laying off more than 50 workers by mid-October when that plant closes.

Officials with the company say challenges last year are driving structural changes and they expect to lose about 60 million gallons of private label volume beginning in the second half of 2018 because of Walmart’s new milk processing plant in Indiana.

Earlier this year, Dean’s notified employees at plants in Georgia, Kentucky, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania they would be closing also.

Walmart announced plans in 2016 to build its own 250,000-square-foot dairy plant in Indiana, which was a hit to Dean Food’s market base, according to the report.
