University of Minnesota Wins Second Contest This Week!

The University of Minnesota, SUNY-Cobleskill,Β  Ohio 4-H, and Minnesota FFA were top teams in their divisions at the 44th Annual Invitational Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, held Monday, Sept. 17, during the 2012 All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg.

From as far as California and Florida, 43 teams competed in the 4-H, FFA, Junior College and Senior Collegiate divisions. The contest included dairy cattle evaluation and oral reasons components. Awards were given based on oral reasons, high scoring individuals and teams of each breed as well as overall breed results in each division.

Teams from the University of Minnesota have won two national contests in as many days. One team won the Accelerated Genetics contest on Sunday and this team won the contest here at the All American. Topping many of the breed individuals and team awards the Minnesota team was the well-deserved high placing collegiate team. Coach Jennifer Becker led the Minnesota team, composed of David Hanson, Theresa Twohey, Jayne Esch and Jacob Acher, to their victory in the collegiate division. Hanson was the highest placing individual in the overall collegiate contest. Placing first in the oral reasons component, and the Brown Swiss and Jersey breed the Minnesota team said they needed a wagon to pull their display of awards back home.

4th – Cornell University
5th – Pennsylvania State University

3rd – Stephen Gould, Cornell University
4th – Theresa Twohey, University of Minnesota
5th – Jayne Esch, University of Minnesota

St. University of New York-Cobleskill tops the Two-Year Junior College

Emily Pelletier, Rayne Paddock, MaryBeth Shults, and Sarah Andrews represented the Cobleskill team coached by John Tryon. Morrisville State College of New York was the second place team and the third place honors were presented to Modesto Junior College of California.

Marshal Hinz was the outstanding Jr. College individual placing first overall. The other high placing indivduals were:

3rd – Emily Pelletier, St. University of New York-Cobleskill
4th – Sarah Andrew, St. University of New York-Cobleskill
5th – Rayne Paddock, St. University of New York-Cobleskill

Ohio team leads the 4-H Judging Contest

Top five teams in the division were:
1st – Ohio 4-H
2nd – New York 4-H
3rd – Wisconsin 4-H
4th – Pennsylvania 4-H
5th – Maryland 4-H

Top five individuals were:
1st – Trent Miller, Wisconsin 4-H
2nd – Emily Dudash, Ohio 4-H
3rd – Abigail Jantzi, New York 4-H
4th – Hillary Jackson, Ohio 4-H
5th – Laura Bond, Ohio 4-H

Minnesota FFA Wins Division for the Second Year Running

Both in 2011 and again in 2012 the Minnesota FFA Team took top honors in the FFA division during the judging contest. Team members were among three of the top five placing individuals. The team consisted of Kayla Leiding, Haely Leiding, Jared Troendle, and Travis Troendle coached by Stacy Leiding.

2nd – Kayla Leiding, Minnesota FFA
3rd – Emma Eckrote, Indiana FFA
4th – Travis Troendle, Minnesota FFA
5th – Taylor Gunter, Georgia FFA

The remaining FFA teams in order were:
2nd – Georgia FFA
3rd – Indiana FFA
4th – Missouri FFA
5th – West Virginia FFA

Awards were sponsored by the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein and Jersey breed associations and the All-American Dairy Show. Genex Cooperative, Inc. and the All-American Dairy Foundation sponsored the judging contest, and the Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association sponsored the banquet.
