The world renowned Richaven Herd has been turning the dreams of owner Richard Brown into reality for twenty two years. Now Richard’s hard work is to go on show at a special Open Day and Elite Sale at Northfield Farm, Hanley Castle near Worcester, on Saturday 4th July.

Visitors will be able to spend the morning viewing the prize winning herd. After lunch they will have the opportunity to bid on 15 animals specially selected for the Richaven Elite Sale and being managed by Harrison and Hetherington.

Richaven cows blazed a trail of success at this year’s UK Dairy Expo organised by Harrison & Hetherington. They won Holstein and Supreme Champion with Richaven Goldwyn Squaw 6; Reserve Champion Holstein with Richaven Rapture Rebecca and they also won the Ayrshire championship with Loukat Lucky. In the Holstein section they also scooped Premiere Breeder and Premiere Exhibitors of the Show.

This is one of the best Holstein herds to be bred outside North America, the 70 milking cows consist of 28 Excellent, (9 classified EX94 or more) all the cows having had two or more calves are either Excellent or Very Good and the milking heifers average VG86. The average daily yield is 34kgs 4.28% butterfat 3.28% protein with a cell count of 97. They are grazed from April to November with buffer feeding taking place in the fields in the evenings; most of the milk production from these high yielding cows comes directly from forage.

Founded on strong maternal cow families the Richaven herd is now one of the most desirable herds in the UK to visit. Richard said: “We are a working herd where the milking and show cows live as one milking group all year round and we breed these animals to perform well both in the parlour and in the show ring. These are not manicured showing animals, they are animals that are bred to perform under commercial conditions in the parlour. All of the animals we have chosen to sell have the potential to be stars both in the parlour and the show ring.”

“The sale has daughters from all our best and most successful show cows and families and a few are the only daughters we have from our very best cows.”

Entries include, the only daughter of the All Britain winner Richaven Rapture Rebecca EX93 sired by Gen-I-Beq Sammy. Two sisters sired by Explode and Doorman from the All Britain winner Richaven Goldwyn Adrienne EX95. Also the Explode, daughter of one of the most anticipated cows at Richaven, Goldwyn Irene EX90, the All Britain in 2012.

One of the rising stars in this quality herd is Richaven Sid Squaw VG89 2yr, this stylish young milking heifer won her class at UK Dairy Day 2014 and was Reserve All Britain Junior two year old 2014. Her only daughter by Numero Uno is one of the entries in the sale.
