Black & White Sale – UK

December 1, 2012 @ Carlisle, UK

Sale Report

The 2012 edition of the Black & White Sale, Borderway Sale Centre, Carlisle (1st December) was one of absolute quality from beginning to end.  From National Champion’s to chart topping genomic giants; the event was a wonderful showcase of the elite world of dairy genetics.  Buyers from six countries and nineteen counties saw trade top at 23,500gns with an overall sale average of £3846 for an almost complete clearance.

It is also worth noting that many breeders regarded this sale as of the best consignment sales ever to be hosted in the UK. However, many of the outstanding individuals sold for realistic prices; reflecting the current position of dairy industry.

“Once again the breeders in UK, Ireland & mainland Europe offered their very best at the Black & White sale.  This is the key ingredient to the event’s success and I would like to thank everyone who consigned animals to this year’s event.  The sale continues to be one of Europe’s premier elite dairy sales, and is an excellent marketing venue for UK breeders to showcase their livestock genetics to an international and domestic audience,” said H&H auctioneer Glyn Lucas.

Top price was Lillyhall Windbrook Trilly, consigned by Ruth Watson.  Trilly’s dam Go-Farm Million Trilly VG88 is regarded by many in the breed as one of the best two year old heifers in the business, and the best female sired by England-Ammon Million.  Her grand dam is full sister to Go-Farm Artes and is one of Europe’s outstanding bull mothers.  Trilly sold for 23,500gns and now joins the herd of IW & EAJ Hughes, Gilfachafael, Ceredigion, Wales.

Sahara Holstein consigned a number of heifers, all with show winning style and high genomic values.  Two Numero Uno daughters; from Hood ATM Jessica VG88 2yr, got bidders bouncing.  Sahara Numero Uno Jane had the highest genomic index in the sale with a GTPI+2337; PTAT+3.08, NM 741, her full sister Sahara Numero Uno Jessica tested with a GTPI+2275; PTAT+3.47, NM 613.  Jessica sold for 14,000gns to a syndicate of Overside Holsteins, Annan Holsteins & Logan Holsteins, Scotland.  Jane sold for 9,500gns to MA Jeans Farms Ltd, Peaden Farm, Somerset.

This year’s catalogue had the best offering of show animals outside North America.  Many class winners and Junior Champions graced the sale with one of the outstanding lots consigned by Richard, Michael & Bob Laurence.  Lynholme Gold Wishes, Champion at the Lancashire Calf Show and Junior Champion at Northern Dairy Expo, had four full sisters shown in the milking classes at last month’s Toronto Royal Winter Fair, with the youngest sibling being placed third in the Junior two year old class.  Gold Wishes sold for 10,000gns to David Wright of the Berryholme herd in Kendal, Cumbria.

Panda Alexa Fools Gold and Panda Allyander Fools Gold were sold on choice and probably had created more interest prior to the sale than any other consignment.  Both heifers excelled in style and class, Alexa had been Champion at the National Calf Show and Allyander had been first in her class at the National Holstein Show, along with several other winning titles.  Their dam is the Red Goldwyn owned by Morsan Farms, Canada, one of the most unique animals in the breed.  Alexa was bought by Belle Genetics for 6,000gns.

Selling for 7,000gns to D & BJ McCormick, Kirkcudbright, Dumfriesshire, was Logan Epic Autumn, consigned by Brain & Michael Yates, East Logan, Castle Douglas.  Autumn had a GTPI+2203; PTAT+2.81, NM 621, her dam sold in the Genetic Elite Sale at Borderway in 2011 for 12,000gns.  Her grand dam is MS Atlees Roy Autumn VG89 2yr, All American Milking Yearling 2008.

The Marie’s, owned and developed by the Dennison family, have dominated the headlines in the Black & White sale for almost a decade and this year was no exception.  It was a first for Europe with an offering of a choice of three daughters sired by Cabon Fernand from Denmire Goldwyn Marie 52 VG87 2yr.  This amazing young cow has bred progeny testing over 2400 on GTPI with yields over 12,000kgs @ 5.67% butterfat and 3.79% protein.  This potential chart topping animal sold for 6,000gns to Billy Scott, Largs, Ayrshire.

Also selling for 6,000gns was a daughter of Snowman from a very popular line of the Roxy family.  Heavenly Snowy Rhonda is descended from a Goldwyn dam out of a Shottle daughter of Brigeen Convincer Rhonda EX95.  She was purchased by Victor Jackson, Kiltegan, Rep. of Ireland.  Her full sister was offered on choice and sold for 4,200gns to Mark Lee, Great Brington, Northhampton.  Both of these heifers were consigned by D&J Gray & Heavenly Genetics.
