Twelve Years and a Dream
Norm Nabholz

Anybody that covets banners has done it. “Let’s put a couple extra on the trailer for points.” At the recent All American Jersey show, with right at 300 head exhibited, there were strings of homebred’s numbering 15 or more and then there was a group of three head, that’s correct THREE homebred cows that carried home enough hardware and banners to rival them all. The take was a beautiful Green Jersey
Jug banner, two sets of “Silverware”, trophies, blue ribbons, best udder rosettes and a huge banner for Reserve Premier breeder, all with three head. The accomplishment would be hard to duplicate for sure, if not nearly impossible. Here’s the story.

Two young Midwesterners have accomplished more in twelve years of breeding Jerseys than most farms will in decades. Dig this: 2 Jersey Jug Winners (which ranks them near the top of Jersey Jug Winning breeders), 20 All-American Nominations, at this years All American Jersey show they won the Senior Best 3 Females and were runner-up for Premier Breeder. The herd has had one 95-point cow and four
94-point cows to date. At one of the strongest state fairs in the country this group has achieved Supreme Champions, Junior Show Champions and a host of class winners. All of this with a milking herd of fifteen cows.

Discovery Genetics is the partnership of Lisa Demmer and Kevin Krejci. Lisa grew up showing Holsteins at her family’s, Demmer Farms in Southern Minnesota. The farm’s Holsteins have been a mainstay in Minnesota for decades and are no stranger to show ring success, but while in high school Lisa became interested in Jerseys and wanted to diversify the home farm so with the encouragement of family, particularly Grandfather David, Thomsen 4226 Cadillac Jay was purchased as a calf. What a purchase as Jay went on to score EX-95, become Grand Champion at the Minnesota

State Fair (Jr.) and a four-time class winner in Milking form in the Open Show.

To date there have been 15 All-American nominations from the Jay family including Discoverys Tequila Jewelene EX-94, the 2014 Jersey Jug Winner, 2015 Intermediate Champion at World Dairy Expo, and 2016 Minnesota State Fair Grand Champion and Supreme Champion, earning her All-American honors as both a Four Year old and Five Year old. Discoverys Tequila Jaguar EX-91 is a daughter of an EX-94 Furor x EX-94 Jade and then Cadillac Jay EX-95. Jaguar has already been a 2X Intermediate Champion at the Minnesota State Fair and was All-American as a Sr. Calf and Reserve All-American as a Milking Yearling and as a Sr. 2 Year Old. Jaguar is nominated for next year’s Jersey Jug.

Kevin grew up spending his days on his Grandfather’s grade Holstein farm and through 4-H developed a passion for breeding and developing high quality dairy cattle with an emphasis on the show ring. After college, with a purchase of a package of embryos in partnership with Townside Farms in 2007, he was off to the races. The embryos were sired by Vindication from an EX Patrick daughter of Jaspar
Renaissance Evening of Bridon Fame. One of the resulting calves was Bridon Vindicaton Evelyn-ET who would score EX-92 and produced Discoverys Tequila Escape, the 2016 Jersey Jug Winner.

Lisa and Kevin met in 2006 at World Dairy Expo and started the Discovery prefix in 2008. Lisa attended University of Wisconsin-River Falls for her undergraduate work and completed her Veterinary degree from the University of Minnesota. Kevin graduated from University of Wisconsin-Stout with a degree in Engineering. While both maintain full time careers, Kevin as a Manufacturing Engineer and Lisa as a
practicing Veterinarian, both work their schedules so they can be at the farm most days of the week.

Both Lisa and Kevin are quick to credit the guidance from the family and friends who have assisted them along their journey, with helpful lessons gained from Lisa’s dad and grandfather and in Kevin’s case the Duane Midtling family. At the shows all the preparation is done by the young duo including clipping, filling and bagging. Both keep a watchful eye to see the new methods in preparation and say they have
learned the most through trial and error.

The future looks bright for Discovery with all the cows again bred back for 2017 and two great young cows nominated for next year’s Jersey Jug. With a breeding program geared towards high type, proven sires and deep cow families, the sky is the limit for what they will discover.
