Two Canadian Scientists are Recipients of Prestigious Awards in Animal Breeding and Genetics

Dr. Flavio Schenkel and Dr. Filippo Miglior were recent recipients of two prestigious awards. Dr. Flavio Schenkel was the 2018 recipient of the J. L. Lush Award in Animal Breeding, presented by the American Dairy Science Association during the Annual Meeting in Knoxville, TN. The J. L. Lush Award was created to recognize outstanding research in animal breeding. Dr. Filippo Miglior was the 2018 recipient of the Rockefeller Prentice Memorial Award in Animal Breeding and Genetics presented by the American Society of Animal Science at its annual meeting in Vancouver, BC. The Rockefeller Prentice Memorial Award recognizes an individual’s research excellence in breeding and genetics.

Dr. Flavio Schenkel is a professor of dairy cattle breeding and genomics at the University of Guelph, Canada. He is also a faculty member of the Bioinformatics Program and the Director of the Centre for Genetic Improvement of Livestock (CGIL). Dr. Schenkel embodies the most desired characteristics of a leading scholar: a probing mind, high productivity, and a passion for academic activities. He is an inspiring mentor for students and colleagues and has published more than 140 refereed papers in scientific journals.

Dr. Filippo Miglior is Chief of Research & Development at Canadian Dairy Network (CDN) and Adjunct Faculty member at the University of Guelph. He is a Senior Editor for the Journal of Dairy Science since 2005, member of several industry boards, and Past-President of the Canadian Society of Animal Science. He is author of two book chapters, 106 scientific journal articles, and over 500 articles/conference proceedings. Dr. Miglior leads several research projects overseeing a team that exceeds 20 graduate students and researchers. Dr. Miglior is an outstanding member and leader of the international dairy genetics community. Due to his devotion to the dairy industry and far-reaching international experience, he is highly recognized worldwide by industry, academic and government colleagues.

Drs. Schenkel and Miglior are most worthy and deserving recipients for the J. L. Lush Award and the Rockefeller Prentice Award, respectively. Both outstanding scientists have been involved for many years with two advisory committees of CDN, namely the DairyGen Research Council and the Genetic Evaluation Board and Dr. Miglior has been a member of the CDN team for over 18 years.
